Build the Measure

Summary
A concept-building and practice activity in which students use note and rest cards to build complete measures in a given time signature, helping them understand note and rest values, time signatures, and rhythmic relationships within a measure.
Procedures
- 1
Form Teams and Introduce the Challenge: The teacher divides students into teams, gives each team a set of note and rest cards, and provides a time signature, such as 4/4.
- 2
Start the Challenge: At the teacher’s signal, each team works together to select and arrange cards to build a complete measure that matches the given time signature.
- 3
Check and Score: When finished, the team raises their hands. The teacher checks the total rhythmic value. A correct measure earns one point; if incorrect, the team continues working to revise it.
- 4
Perform the Rhythm: Before receiving the point, the entire team must count and correctly clap the rhythm they created.
- 5
Begin the Next Round: The teacher introduces a new condition, such as changing the time signature, requiring a rest, or requiring a specific note value. Teams then begin a new round.
Variations
Teams can create their own measures, exchange them with another team, and clap or perform the rhythms. The teacher may also perform a rhythm and ask students to reconstruct the measure using the cards.
Activity Preparation
1. Multiple sets of note and rest cards, one set per team
2. Measure templates
3. Time-signature cards, such as 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4
4. A scoreboard or another method for team scoring (optional)
5. Make sure each team receives the same types and number of materials.
Activity Sources
- Source Type:
- Learned from a teacher
MAPS teaching activities may come from a variety of sources, including original contributions by the MAPS team, online resources, published materials, activities learned from teachers, activities shared by colleagues, traditional teaching practices, and other sources.
