Drop, Lift, Turn, Land

Summary

Students explore a natural, relaxed piano hand position through a four-step movement sequence: Drop, Lift, Turn, Land. Beginning with the arms resting naturally at the sides, students lift the forearms, rotate them a quarter turn toward the thumbs, and gently bring the hands to the keyboard while maintaining their natural shape and a sense of relaxation.

Procedures

  1. 1

Drop: Ask students to let their arms hang naturally at their sides. Encourage them to release tension in the shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands, allowing the fingers to rest in their natural shape.

  2. 2

Lift: Keeping the arms and hands relaxed, ask students to bend their elbows and lift their forearms until they are approximately parallel to the floor.

  3. 3

Turn: Ask students to rotate their forearms a quarter turn toward the thumbs, bringing the palms to face downward. Remind them to let the wrists and fingers remain relaxed rather than deliberately shaping the hands.

  4. 4

Land: Move the hands over the keyboard and gently lower them onto the keys, maintaining the natural hand shape established through the previous movements.

  5. 5

Repeat: Guide students through the complete sequence—Drop, Lift, Turn, Land—several times. Gradually reduce verbal prompts and encourage students to complete the sequence independently.
