Find a Friend!

Summary

A harmony activity: students sit in a circle and each silently chooses one note from a simple triad (e.g. DO, MI, SOL). After the teacher gives the reference pitch, everyone sings their chosen note while walking around, listening for classmates singing the same note, and pairs up with them. The game trains sustained pitch, listening, and the feel of chord harmony.

Procedures

  1. 1

Everyone sits in a circle and chooses one note from DO, MI, SOL to sing - keep it in mind.

  2. 2

The teacher gives the reference pitch; everyone sings their chosen note and walks around, listening for classmates singing the same note and finding their friends.

  3. 3

Try singing on 'u' instead of solfege names.

Variations

1. Start the game with just two notes, DO and MI.

2. Students should concentrate and hold their own pitch first, then go find friends.

3. Listening is very important.

4. Use filler syllables such as 'u' and 'a' instead of solfege names to make it harder.

5. The game can also be played with subdominant and dominant chords.
