Finger Staff

Summary

A solfege and note-reading game in which students turn their own hand into a staff: each finger (and the spaces between) represents a different pitch. Students confirm the solfege names from bottom to top, sing the scale by pointing finger to finger, answer solfege names the teacher points at, and finally play simple songs (e.g. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) on their finger staff for others to guess.

Procedures

  1. 1

Spread five fingers; confirm the solfege name of each finger position from bottom to top.

  2. 2

Use the right index finger to point at the different fingers of the left hand while singing the scale.

  3. 3

The teacher points at a position and students answer the solfege name.

  4. 4

The teacher points at two notes in a row and students answer both solfege names.

  5. 5

Point along your fingers and sing a simple song (e.g. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star: DO DO SOL SOL...).

  6. 6

The teacher points out the melody of a song on the finger staff; students guess the song title.

Variations

1. Stick solfege labels on the fingers to support student learning.

2. If students find it difficult, reduce the range to 3-5 notes at a time (e.g. DO-MI).

3. The game can be played between teacher and students, or between students themselves.

Activity Preparation

1. No special props needed; 2. Optional solfege stickers for the fingers.
