From Body Solfège to the Keyboard

Summary

An ear-training and keyboard activity that transfers the body-solfège map into keyboard space. Students first connect the vertical low-to-high organization of the body with the piano’s left-to-right pitch direction, then use solfège to listen, sing, and locate pitches on the keyboard. The activity begins with Middle C as Do and later progresses to movable Do, helping students develop relative-pitch awareness and stronger connections among hearing, singing, and keyboard location.

Procedures

  1. 1

Review body-solfège ladder : from lower Do at the feet to higher Do at the top of the head. Do—feet; Re—mid-calf; Mi—knees; Fa—mid-thigh; Sol—waist; La—shoulders; Ti—ear; high Do—top of the head.

  2. 2

Connect Vertical and Horizontal Pitch: Then show the same low-to-high relationship on the piano: on the body, pitch rises vertically; on the keyboard, pitch rises from left to right. Sing Do–Re–Mi–Fa–Sol–La–Ti–Do while students trace the body positions and observe the corresponding direction on the keyboard.

  3. 3

Begin with Middle C as Do: Establish Middle C as Do. Have students sing the ascending and descending solfège scale, then locate the corresponding notes on the keyboard. Reinforce the connection among solfège syllables, pitch direction, and keyboard position.

  4. 4

Teacher Sings, Students Find: Sing a short solfège pattern such as Do–Mi–Sol, Do–Re–Mi, or Sol–Mi–Do. Students listen first, sing the pattern back, show the corresponding body positions if needed, and then find and play the pattern on the keyboard.

  5. 5

Teacher Plays, Students Identify: Play a short pattern on the keyboard without naming the syllables. Students listen, identify and sing the solfège, then locate and play the same pattern on their keyboards. Begin with stepwise patterns and repeated notes before adding simple skips.

  6. 6

Move to Movable Do: Once students are secure with Middle C as Do, choose a different starting pitch and establish it as the new Do. Students listen to the new tonic, sing short solfège patterns relative to it, and find the corresponding pitches on the keyboard. Emphasize that Do can begin on different keys while the solfège relationships remain the same.

  7. 7

Short Ear-Training Patterns: Continue with brief patterns that include stepwise motion, repeated notes, skips, and ascending or descending contours. Students move through the sequence Hear → Sing → Locate → Play, using the body map only when additional support is needed.

Variations

1. Five-Note Range: Limit patterns to Do–Re–Mi–Fa–Sol before expanding to the full octave.

2. Body Support On or Off: Allow students to use the body-solfège positions during early rounds, then gradually remove the body cues as their aural and keyboard responses become more secure.

3. Student Leader: A student chooses the tonic, sings or plays a short pattern, and classmates identify and reproduce it on their keyboards.

Activity Preparation

1.Students should already be familiar with the body-solfège ladder and the order Do–Re–Mi–Fa–Sol–La–Ti–Do.

2.Each student needs access to a piano or keyboard.

3. The teacher should choose comfortable tonal centers and begin with short, singable patterns.
