High and Low

Summary

Students listen for high and low pitches and respond with their bodies — walk tall (or raise hands high) for high notes, and walk in a squat for low notes. Connecting hearing to movement, the game builds pitch discrimination and quick reactions.

Procedures

  1. 1

    Teacher hums or sings a high pitch; students respond by walking tall or raising their hands high.

  2. 2

    Teacher sings a low pitch; students respond by walking in a squat.

  3. 3

    Teacher sings a sequence of high and low pitches; students keep walking and change their body height with the pitch.

  4. 4

    Play a well-known tune with a clear melodic contour (e.g., “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” or “Ode to Joy”); students follow the melodic line with their bodies.

Variations

1. Hands-only variant: raise hands high for high pitch and lower them for low pitch — can be played seated.

2. Speed up the pitch changes to test quick reactions.

3. Let students take turns being the “leader”, singing high or low notes for the class to follow.

Activity Preparation

1.Teacher prepares clear high/low vocal (or piano) examples in advance;

2.A well-known piece of music with an obvious melodic contour (optional);

3. A spacious area for walking movement.
