Ice breaker activity: Zip Zap Zop

Summary

Players stand in a circle and pass three words hand to hand — the leader says "zip" and claps toward someone; that person finds someone else and says "zap"; the next person says "zop" — and the whole group keeps the three words travelling around the circle.

Procedures

  1. 1

Circle Formation and Word Pass (3 minutes): Have the entire class form a circle and stand facing inward. First, practice three words to be passed: "zip", "zap", and "zop".

  2. 2

Rules: The facilitator says "zip" first, claps hands, and points to any person in the circle; the person pointed to must quickly respond by saying the second word, "zap", while clapping fingers toward any other person in the circle; the third person pointed to then follows the same actions as the previous two and says the third word, "zop".

  3. 3

Continuous Circle Movement (4 minutes): Everyone continues to move in a circle: "Zip – Zap – Zop!" The three words are passed continuously without stopping. When people are getting used to this game, the tempo can be faster.

Variations

1. Classroom Management: keep enough arm space between players so clapping hands never hit a neighbour; before the fast rounds, agree that a clap goes to a person — not into the air — so the pass stays clear.

2. Difficulty Adjustments: Easier—start with only two words (zip and zap) and add zop when the class is steady; harder—speed up round by round, or let the receiver choose anyone in the circle, not just a neighbour.

Activity Preparation

A circle of open floor; no props — only hands and voices.
