Pass the Beat Around the Room

Summary
A group rhythm game in which students pass a fixed phrase around a circle, with each student speaking one word/syllable on the beat. Students maintain a steady beat, respond at the correct moment, and perform a movement on the rest.
Procedures
- 1
Learn the Phrase: The teacher introduces the phrase “Pass-the-Beat-A-round-the-Room” and leads the class in speaking it together at a steady tempo, in 4/4. On the rest, students tap their shoulders.
- 2
Form a Circle: Students stand in a large circle. Explain that the phrase will travel around the circle one word/syllable at a time, with each student responsible for the next word or rest action.
- 3
Pass the Beat: The first student says the first word, the next student says the next word, and the sequence continues around the circle without interrupting the steady beat.
- 4
Keep the Beat Going: If a student enters too early, too late, says the wrong word, or causes the beat to stop, pause briefly to identify what happened and restart the pattern. An elimination version may be used if appropriate for the class.
Variations
1. Increase the tempo gradually while keeping the beat steady.
2. Remove one spoken word but keep its beat silent; replace the missing word with a movement such as a stomp.
3. Change the rest action, for example clapping, patting knees, or stomping.
4.Use a non-elimination version so students who make a mistake remain in the circle and continue practicing.
5. Let students lead the group by choosing the tempo or movement for the rest.
