Performance Playback

Summary

Students perform a prepared piano piece or excerpt while the teacher makes an audio or video recording on a phone or other device. Immediately afterward, students listen to or watch the recording and identify at least one aspect they did well and one area for further improvement. The teacher then builds on each student's self-assessment and guides the student in turning those observations into a specific goal for the next practice session.

Procedures

  1. 1

The teacher selects a piece or excerpt that the student has already practiced and can perform with reasonable continuity. Before the performance, the teacher tells the student that it will be recorded and explains that the purpose is to help the student observe and evaluate the performance.

  2. 2

The student performs the assigned excerpt in its entirety while the teacher makes an audio or video recording with a phone, tablet, or other device.

  3. 3

After the performance, the teacher does not immediately offer an evaluation; instead, the teacher and student listen to or watch the recording together.

  4. 4

The student first identifies at least one aspect that was done well and, whenever possible, names the specific location and explains why.

  5. 5

The student then identifies at least one area that needs improvement and names the specific location。

  6. 6

The teacher builds on the student's self-assessment. If the student has accurately identified the issue, the teacher can help analyze its cause; if the student has overlooked an important issue, the teacher can guide the student to listen to or watch the relevant passage again.

  7. 7

The teacher and student work together to turn the area for improvement into a specific, actionable practice goal.

Variations

1. When time allows, have the student practice the issue briefly, perform the passage again, and compare the results before and after the adjustment.

2. The teacher may designate one focus in advance, such as "today, listen only for melody-accompaniment balance" or "today, observe only the wrist movement," to help the student learn to evaluate the performance more specifically.

3. The same method can be used with other instruments.

Activity Preparation

1. A phone, tablet, or other device capable of making audio or video recordings.

2. A piece or excerpt that the student has already prepared to a basic performance level.

Activity Sources

Adaptation Notes:
This activity organizes the common practice of recording performances into a clear instructional sequence. It emphasizes that the teacher does not immediately evaluate the performance; instead, the student first engages in self-observation and identifies at least one strength and one area for improvement.
