Phrase Painting for Choir

Summary

Students paint the shape and emotion of a choral phrase with their voices, using dynamics, breathing plans, and text meaning to shape musical expression.

Procedures

  1. 1

The class reads the chosen choral text aloud in a natural speaking voice and talks about what the words mean and which word feels most important.

  2. 2

The teacher draws the melodic shape of the phrase on the board as a rising and falling line, and the class traces it in the air while humming.

  3. 3

Students plan their breaths: the class marks where to breathe so the phrase can be sung in one long legato line, then practices the phrase in one breath.

  4. 4

The teacher models the phrase twice with different dynamic shapes (crescendo to a peak, then a gentle decrescendo; or keep the same dynamic), and students choose which shape best matches the meaning of the words.

  5. 5

The choir sings the phrase with the chosen dynamics and breath plan, and a small group sings it a second time from memory to check that the shape is consistent.

  6. 6

Students reflect with a quick hand signal on how well their breathing supported the musical expression, and the class sings the phrase once more as a polished closing statement.
