Ping-Pong Variations: Spot the Disguise

Summary

A short listening game on Wang Zhigang's piano solo Ping-Pong Variations. Students hum the bouncing theme once, then race to spot which variation is playing by listening for register, accompaniment and tempo.

Procedures

  1. 1

Ping-pong warm-up (1 min): students clap a 2/4 strong-weak bounce on the desk while saying "ping-pong, ping-pong" — feel the short, springy beat.

  2. 2

Memorize the theme (2 minutes): Using "tu," sing through the theme with a short, crisp, and lively tone, while using your fingers to indicate the rises and falls of the melody in the air.

  3. 3

The game (5 min): play the theme plus three or four variation excerpts. For each one students hold up fingers (1 = theme, 2 = Variation 1, and so on) or point to a picture card (low register = crouch and play low; high register = reach up high).

  4. 4

Give the clue after each round: the teacher names the one thing that changed — register, accompaniment or tempo — and students echo it in one word.

  5. 5

One-sentence wrap (2 min): each student finishes "This variation sounded like..." with a ping-pong picture (a warm-up rally, a fast smash, the final cheer).

Variations

Students invent one variation of their own by changing the theme's speed or register, perform it in four beats, and the class guesses what they changed.
