Primary Chords Cross Puzzle

Summary

Primary Chords Cross Puzzle is a printable activity that helps students explore the three primary chords in C major. Using the C major scale as a reference, students complete intersecting note patterns to build the tonic (C–E–G), subdominant (F–A–C), and dominant (G–B–D) triads. They then identify each chord using Roman numerals (I, IV, V) and harmonic function names. The activity also highlights the fifth relationships among F, C, and G, helping students recognize how the three primary chords are connected. It can be used for individual practice, partner work, or a quick formative assessment.

Procedures

  1. 1

Review the C Major Scale. Ask students to review the notes of the C major scale and explain how to build a triad by selecting every other note.

  2. 2

Complete the Cross. Students fill in the missing notes to form three triads: F–A–C, C–E–G, and G–B–D. Encourage them to use the intersecting notes as clues.

  3. 3

Identify the Chords. Students write the Roman numerals (IV, I, V) and identify each chord as subdominant, tonic, or dominant.

  4. 4

Notice the Relationships. Guide students to observe the roots F–C–G. Point out that F is a fifth below C, while G is a fifth above C.

Variations

1. Keyboard Application: Students play the three primary chords on the keyboard and compare their sounds.

2. Transposition Challenge: Apply the same puzzle structure to another major key, such as G or D major.

3. Partner Challenge: Students work in pairs, taking turns completing the missing notes and explaining how each triad is constructed.

Activity Preparation

1. Printable student worksheet.

2. Pencil or writing utensil.

3. Optional: piano or keyboard for checking selected interval answers.
