Rhythm Race

Summary

The class is split into two or more teams, each team stands in its own circle, and one by one points at a teammate and calls the letters in order — a, b, c … The first team to reach z wins. Players may not simply go around the circle clockwise or anticlockwise and may not invent new letters.

Procedures

  1. 1

Forming Circles: Divide the entire class into two groups; if there are more people, divide them into more groups. Each group stands in their own circle with their faces turned inward, leaving sufficient space between individuals for passing the ball.

  2. 2

Memorizing Alphabet Order: Participants must call out the letters in alphabetical order, from A to Z. (This can be adapted by using musical notes or solfège instead.)

  3. 3

One Person Points, One Person Says: The first player starts by pointing to a teammate and saying "a"; the person pointed to then points to another teammate and says "b"; then comes "c," "d," "e," and so on. Each letter is called by one person while pointing to the next person.

  4. 4

Players must not proceed in a clockwise or counter-clockwise sequence. They must freely point to any teammate, ensuring that others cannot guess who will be next.

  5. 5

Rushing Toward Z: Each group calls out from A through Z. If a letter is called incorrectly, the player must retreat to correct it before continuing. Play for two or three rounds; the winning group may exchange one member with another group before starting the next round.
