Two Songs at Same Time

Summary

A part-singing challenge: two groups sing two different songs at the same time, both built on the same chord progression (e.g. Mary Had a Little Lamb and Xiao Hua Niu). Students first sing each song separately, then sing them together while matching measure to measure, and finally try other pairs of songs with the same harmony.

Procedures

  1. 1

Find two songs with roughly the same chord progression, and sing each of them separately first.

  2. 2

One part of the students sings the first song while the other part starts singing the second song at the same time.

  3. 3

At the beginning, middle and end of the songs, keep checking that measures stay aligned.

  4. 4

Now find another pair of songs with the same chord progression and sing them together.

  5. 5

Keep changing song pairs, and feel what it is like to sing two melodies at once.

  6. 6

Make sure you sing your own melody correctly from beginning to end without mistakes!

Variations

1. Start with two-part singing between teacher and students.

2. Sing short nursery songs slowly and feel the multi-part texture.

3. Keep intonation accurate while practicing.

4. Sing softly so the shared chord progression of the two songs can be felt.

5. Sing on solfege names to help students recognize the harmony.

6. Sing on oo instead of words.
