Whole & Half Step Cross Puzzle

Summary
Whole & Half Step Cross Puzzle is a printable activity for practicing whole steps and half steps. Students follow the clues to fill in missing note names and check their answers at each crossing.

Procedures
- 1
Use this activity after students have already received sufficient instruction and practice in major and minor 2nds, including whole-step and half-step relationships and the use of accidentals.
- 2
Review the puzzle symbols before beginning. Explain that rows are read from left to right and columns from top to bottom. +M2 / +m2 indicate an ascending major/minor 2nd, while −M2 / −m2 indicate a descending major/minor 2nd.
- 3
Model one crossing point. Start from a given note, apply the interval clue, and then check whether the same answer also satisfies the clue in the crossing direction. Emphasize that one answer must work in both directions.
- 4
Have students complete the puzzle independently or with a partner. Encourage them to begin with the most certain clues and use completed answers to unlock neighboring boxes.
- 5
Ask students to check every completed box in both the horizontal and vertical directions. If an answer does not satisfy both clues, return to the surrounding intervals and revise it.
- 6
Review selected crossing points as a class and invite students to explain how they determined the note. Use the teacher key to confirm answers and reinforce the relationship between interval quality, whole/half steps, and accidentals.
Variations
Ask students to verify selected answers on the piano by playing the starting note and the resulting interval.
Activity Preparation
1. Printable student worksheet and teacher answer key.
2. Pencil or writing utensil.
3. Optional: piano or keyboard for checking selected interval answers.
